Emily

I just started watching the Season 5 episodes that are posted on You Tube and noticed that a housekeeper named "Emily" (played by Nancy Walker) appears in several of them. I haven't seen her first episode so I don't know how she was introduced and what explanation was given for her staying at the Davis household when they already had Mr. French. Can someone clue me in? Thanks!

Season 5, Episode 4 – Aired: 10/8/1970
Meet Emily
When Mr. French gets too strict with the kids, Bill decides that he needs to loosen up. Bill hires Emily Turner to help Mr. French out, and she is won over by the kids because of her openness and free will. Mr. French hates Emily because of her attitude and decides that the apartment isn't big enough for two domestics. Mr. French then realizes that Emily is a great asset and they decide to work together.

Emily was introduced for a couple of reasons. She is a cleaning woman at Uncle Bill's office and works 2 jobs ( I think) one being a night cleaning woman. Uncle Bill works late many nights and they get to talking.
She tells him that she is a widow and her only son is in medical school and she is putting him through with her jobs.

Uncle Bill thinks it would be good to help her out and give her a day job and that Mr. French could use the help. Mr. French is not happy with this at first but eventually sees that she could be helpful. So one reason she was brought in was to have Mr. French have someone to deal with and liven up the show.
Emily is a bit rough around the edges and that played nicely with Mr. French and his refined manner.

Also, Emily has a son in medical school and Cissy has started college so it provided a more mature romantic interest for Cissy. They become serious although they do not get engaged.
