One of my favourites

I can watch this film again and again (thank you TCM)
I love the love story between Alain Delon & Shirley MacLaine.
The scenery in Italy is fabulous.
I would have enjoyed that story alone - padded out to full-film length.
The other stories were ok, but the gangster's moll and the Italian gigolo really touched my heart.
Her self-sacrifice at the end to save him from a fate worse than death never fails to move me.
It was true love - she set him free by making him hate her.
I always wonder what happened to Mae and Stefano.
Star-crossed lovers, 20th century Romeo & Juliet.

I was watching that screening also. I couldn't recall the actress's name for the life of me. I knew it was Shirley or Shelley. I was thinking how much Shirley Maclaine looked like Shirley Jones from The Courtship Of Eddie's Father. The fashion of the time made these stunning women look strangely similar. I also noticed Art Carney was wearing clothes similar to those worn by Tom Ewell in The Seven Year Itch...

I hadn't seen it since I was a kid--but instantly connected with the score, then found myself tearing up with Shirley MacLaine and Alain Delon. Pefectly acted,
perfectly directed. Sweet and moving complexity--

I also liked their story the best! I found the actors and characters really enjoyable and charismatic, all 3 of them: Scott, McLain, and Delon. Also I didn't expect Scott's character to let the affair go, for a gangster that was a big sacrifice indeed. I do think he did love her.
