Completely agree. The movie just wouldn't have the same effect in color. Frankheimer definitely knew what he was doing with black and white including this movie, Manchurian Candidate, Seven Days in May and a couple others.

He knew what he was doing, all right - black and white was cheaper. In color, it would have been at least as good, and probably better.
shareWith all the deep focus and plenty of night shots it was probably much easier to shoot in B&W rather than on a 50 ASA colour negative.
shareThis movie had a $6 Million Budget in 1964! If Frankenheimer wanted color it would have been color. Think about the insane stunts and huge actors in the film. It was absolutely an artistic decision to make it B&W.

shareI'm not too sure. Although I was grabbed by the story, I was looking for a bit more atmosphere that I felt the film lacked.
