I think Claire Bloom and Oskar Werner are both excellent in this film, but I personally found Burton's work rather leaden and dull. It's a slow though watchable film but his performance never really engaged me. I much prefer his two great performances on either side of this - Becket in 1964 and (especially) his glorious George in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 1966.
