shareNot only that, I was really impressed with the cinematography. Wow!
EnriqueH
I agree
The pan shots were brilliant for that time.
Just see the scene where the prisones are being transfered to the ship from the japanese submarine. The one where donkeyman is showing running the length of the ship.
Excellent cinematography as you said !
This was surprisingly good. Brando was really great in it and Brynner had some moving moments. They managed to maintain the suspense throughout. I liked that it didn't have a neat ending, more realistic that way. Kinda sad it's been buried and forgotten.
shareIt`s strange isn`t it how some films just seem to disappear.I saw this for the first time last night after just discovering it by pure chance on Amazon a few weeks ago.A modern audience may find it a bit slow but there`s still tension, twists, genuine surprises & some fine acting.Did it bomb at the box-office in 1965?Maybe that`s the reason it`s so unknown-a real shame to be honest.
shareI cannot believe that this film is not screened on cable often. I found it to be one of the best War Stories I have ever seen.
If you were not a Brando fan before seeing this film, I think Brando's performance in Morituri illustrates why so many people call Brando one of the greats.
I think AMC will be showing this film on the 24th so get your Tivos up and running.
This movie belongs in every movie collectors library as an example of the very best in movie making.
IMHO
Amen to this.
I really dont understand it either.
I am a HUGE BRNADO'S FAN.. and i bought all his movies.
I didnt hope very much of this film, because here it is low rated, but i was surprised, the emotion is always there.. and cinematografia is great for its time.
I dont understand it,, i really dont. Its a great movie,, Brando did great (well, he did always great)
Hi folks. Thanks for your opinions on this film. I've never seen it but I just ordered it from Amazon yesterday. I'm so excited. I can't wait to check it out.
shareThis is a great movie in my opinion and I don't usually like war movies. Brynner and Brando, just great.
"You think I was telling you the truth? Maybe...maybe."
To see this rated 6.9 is a surprise and a disappointment. It has three legends; Brando, Brynner and Trevor Howard, and a good turn by Janet Margolin, a sentimental favorite of mine.
Morituri (1965): 9 out of 10 stars, an essential.
so what's the impression?
have you been disappointed?
I really liked it. Loved the B/W cinematography. Heartbreaking powerful scene when Esther is shot. I agree with most of you, very very underrated film. Brynner and Brando enought said.
shareIn some cases a lot of people complain that a poorly rated movie is underrated and nobody disagrees not because of consensus among the commentators but because the movie has some flaws which are difficult to formulate to back up one's disagreement - there could be some illverbalizable flaws (when one feels that something's wrong but can't explain why even to oneself) or some flaws most people hate to admit for fear of becoming a laughingstock (e.g. why should I give you and other participats of discussion grounds to doubt my mental firmness by admitting the fighting scenes in some old b/w flick remind me of "Transformers 2" because of my total inability to fathom who's fighting whom and thus furthermore by letting everybody erroneously infer that easiness of discrimination of fighting sides is a necessary quality of any fine movie in my eyes).
The premise of shortage of normal loyal nazis to make a crew for a ship loaded with strategic raw material is laughable; most of the characters are cardboard (I've been especially annoyed by the doctor); the dialogues are utterly pathetic - especially when it comes to ideology; and for some reason it feels like all the filming crew had been bored to death - in short imho it's not underrated at all and can be recommended exclusively to Brando's and Brynner's fans (to whom I happily belong:)
Never heard of this flick, but it's in blsck-and-white, and Brando and Brynner are in it, so that's enough reason to look at it. It's being shown on the MOVIES channel tonight.
shareIt is a good film with one of Brando's best performances allowing for his accent which is OK. He got the vowels and consonants close enough.
