This is just speculation, but it may have been to reinforce the idea that the Major was fabulously well-to-do, with an unlimited cash-flow. Perhaps he had a seaside villa in Barbados. It may have been his strategy to show Stillwell how wonderful life can be- a virtual paradise- if only Stillwell will cooperate and give the Major what he wants; in other words, to bribe David into surrendering the formula.
