"If she kniows, then... even 'majo'r will know!"

I saw this film yesterday in Cinematheque (Gregory Peck day, I saw "Arabesque" after this), and Ted Caselle character was confusing. Mathau was in the film as a reward because he was great in Charade (as Gorge Kennedy for that sake), and I thought - the writer wanted us to believe it, I think - that AAA detective agency wasn't his! But he turned to be good guy. Or not?

This is the question from the thread title: when he visited Stillwell's apartment for the first time, and when he asked Stilwell "Who else knows this?", Stillwell remembers Shela and says "She!"

Then Caselle says:
- If she knows, everyone knows, also the major! -
I don't remember when Stillwell mentioned "major" to Caselle before. During the film I thought I discoered Caselle was phony and was expecting a flash-back - the film is packed with them - in which STillwell would remember that sentence and then ask Caselle "How did you know for 'major'?!"

Of course, it's possible I missed something before that.

Si-Fi atmosphere
By the way, it's amazing how SF atmoshere was created with virtually no gadgets and hi-tech: only bakelite phones and voice in the elevatr; still Stillwell could say in early point of the film: "Soon the machines will control the men" or something in that direction.
