Is his accent really identifiable as a particular part of the South ?

When I saw this film as a boy in Scotland in 1965, I though his voice was amazing and how his eyes looked half-sleepy when he talked. To me, he looked like the living embodiment of a Southern trooper, with his little beard and all. He reminded me of my Britain's toy Confederate cavalry figures, complete with ANV Southern Cross flag with regimental name (an Alabama regiment) and battle honours (Seven Pines etc).

The actor who played him, John Davis Chandler, was from West Virginia, for what that's worth. I think it's to be inferred that Tyreen and his men are from the ANV and got transferred west after being captured.

It wouldn't make sense for the Union army to transport rebels captured in the east all the way to New Mexico, hundreds of miles from the nearest railroads.

In Escape from Fort Bravo Rebel prisoners are also being held in a union prison in Arizona or New Mexico. But in both movies it makes more sense to think that the Rebels were captured during General Sibley's invasion of New Mexico in 1862 and being in a remote corner of the war were not exchanged before the prisoner exchange program broke down. And apparently it would cost too much to transport the Rebel prisoners under guard back east to a real prison camp so they were kept under guard where they had been captured and where they would be likely to die of thirst or Apaches if they tried to escape.
