they changed the location

the movie seems based on dakota war of 1862 where sioux indians rebelled agianst dakota civlians and unions who were in the war used confedrative captured soldiers to stop indians and they succeeded . but in movie locationa changed from dakota to mexico. there must be some reasons . we know in hollywood always bad indians are apaches not sioux or cheyennes. and battle of them against french may refer to conflict between america and france over algeria in 1960s

Union and Confederate soldiers also teamed up to battle the Apaches in New Mexico in 1862. I believe it was Confederate soldiers and Union POWs.

The largest use, that I'm aware of, of Confederate POW's to fight Indians, was in the Colorado, New Mexico, Utah area. They were used to a fairly large extent and were called "Galvanized Yankees".
