What do you lads think happened after the end of the movie?
Did Jacko and McGrath kill Williams? Even if they just beat him up do you think they ever had a chance at the court of enquiry? I know the ending suggested it was all covered up but say it did go to court what do youthink the defence and prosecution arguments were?
Williams being badly beaten would probably get him off the hook for what he did to Roberts, but that wouldn't prevent the MO from getting Roberts into hospital. The two issues are seperate. Roberts clearly needed medical attention and would get it. So it least the MO stood up to Wilson, and I think the MO would also back Harris after he made allegations about Williams. One of my top ten films of all time.
Well, in the book, McGrath and King do, in fact, kill Williams. The RSM realizes he's going to get the blame for it, and settles down on his bunk with a drink to mull over destroying his career. The commandant finds out about the murder, screams at Wilson about it, and Wilson chews right back telling him that he, the commandant, had no right to say anything given that he'd pretty much turned over the camp to Wilson in the first place. They then leave to get the camp ready for the new commandant and RSM, which is where the book ends.
I think the Army would have executed McGrath and King just to maintain "discipline" and cover up what really happen. The armed forces do not take kindly to officers and NCOs being beaten up or killed by the enlisted ranks even if those officers and NCOs were bad leaders. When was the last time some British officer and NCO particulary high ranking ones were executed in the field? The same could be said for the French and American armed forces?
When is the last time, you heard of an enlisted man writing up a charge against an officer or NCO for disorderly conduct, unbecoming a soldier, disrespect to a private soldier, having a "dirty" uniform, etc? When I was at a military school, the cadet officers expected you to have your shoes shine, brass polish, and clean rifles. However, many cadet officers did not polish their brass items, shine their shoes, or kept their swords and scabbards clean and at inspection parade every Saturday they would "gig" you for uniform deficienies while nothing happened to them for their unsoldier like appearance, and many of these guys went on to become second lieutenants in the U.S. Army or Marine Corp. The sad thing was that the Regular Army officers and sergeants assigned to the school did not jump on the cadet officers for their lack of proper military appearance. Of course, one reason for it was that some of these cadet officers came from upper class or rich families, so they could get away with such behavior.
