Paul and Ringo

First, I just wanna say that they were insanely funny in this movie and quite adorable. So are John and George, of course. Their comedic timing was just amazing! I kept thinking the whole time that they were the musical, British version of the Three Stooges, except in their case it's the Four Stooges. They probably hadn't got lessons in acting crazy because they were just being themselves. It's awesome! Oh, it's just enjoyable in seeing them play and act like crazed big kids, you know.

You know, originally, I was going to ask if these two still stay in contact with eachother as in talk to one another. I know. A very stupid question. I've been watching videos and some recent vids on them two together on YouTube and they answered my question. I think it's great and sweet that after all these years, they still occasionally perform together and spend time together. They still have that chemistry that never fails to intrigue their fans.
I realized despite that both of them have very busy schedules, they still come together. They've been through ssoooooooooooooooo much together that it's just criminal that they wouldn't continue to be in eachother's lives. Right?

Btw. This is probably just my imagination and maybe I'm looking at this situation all wrong. Plus this is also kinda hinted in this movie. Why does it seem that Paul is a little bit over protective of Ringo? Especially now. Ringo unfortunately always seemed to be looked at as the underdog of the group and is the butt of some jokes. To some, he's known as the 'least famous Beatle'. I personally take offense to that because he's a great drummer and bandmate. And it's not just Paul, it's the other two, as well. I see how some interviewers kinda ingnore him(Ringo) in interviews. I remember someone saying that back then, in one interview, George was talking to a reporter and he then introduces Ringo because the reporter wasn't asking him any questions. I tell you. Some people can be so rude. Poor Ringo had to deal with that kind of crap almost all of his life.

But, anyway, I just think that despite of all that, Ringo is still his cool ole' self and still kickin'. Same as Paul. And I think they're still continuing to amaze and adore their fans.

What you guys think?

reply

Paul wasn't in competition with Ringo like he was with John, and even to some extent, George. E.g., Paul took lead away from George on the recordings at times. George and Ringo are said to have felt like accompanists in the John and Paul band.

Can't say I've ever felt that way in the dozen bands I was drummer for, but then none were ever famous or had talents on the level of John or Paul. BTW, Ringo taught me everything I knew. One of our groups could play Rain live, note for note, including the backwards vocal at the end (which I can still do today).

The same thing happened in Buffalo Springfield, with Stephen Stills and Neil Young as John and Paul, and Richie Furay as George. Ever even heard of their drummer, Dewey Martin?

When these guys get older they come to realize how few people in their lives were really close and important, and get over their petty jealousies.

reply

I know. Each of the guys had their share of rivalries, jealousies, and differences, but it didn't stop them from helping eachother out with lots of stuff.

And you know, I don't think there's ever a band like these guys where talents are so unique in such a way that it's hard to say how amazing they really are.

Yes. What I'm saying is that with Paul, even now, after all that he's been through, it seems that he's close-knit with Ringo. Forgive me for being so moody but I think he looks to Ringo as more than just an old friend. They joke around like they've always have but it's like they both hold on to eachother since it's just the two of them. Besides, I bet John and George would want them two to take care of eachother.

reply

Onlyu until Abbey Road though.

reply

All of them, including the wives and children, have said that the Beatles is a second family. They visit each other houses, attended each other's weddings, have a meal together at a restuarant, say a final goodbye at a last visit, or funeral, they are binded together. Families have drama but they also have a close bond and that's what the Beatles have done.

"We are the Knights who say... NI." -Monty Python and the Holy Grail

reply

Exactly. They are like a big family. I've also heard that they would often visit eachother and even call to talk to one another. They are FOREVER binded together. How I look at the guys, even the ones who're in a better place, they're like brothers and close relatives of how they interact with eachother.

In some of the interviews and few of the documentaries, I see how they would interact, sending mental messages to eachother, and almost pretty much can tell what the other is gonna say or think. Even nowadays! That's what life long, destined friends do. I think it's so cute that they do so and it shows how they deeply care for eachother. It's bittersweet yet a blessing that Paul and Ringo continue to grow old together and still have that energy left in them and keep up the legacies of their two beloved angel buddies. Thank you Beatles.

Btw, this is kinda half off topic and sorta random but, how do they feel about their fans? Again, I'm still a newcomer trying to get use to them more and learning.

reply

Family, that's the word. John on Paul, December 8, 1980:

"Well, he's like a brother. I love him. Families... we certainly have our ups and downs and our quarrels. But at the end of the day, when it's all said and done, I would do anything for him, [and] I think he would do anything for me."

reply

I've enjoyed reading through this post. I am referring to the OP when saying Ringo was slighted

I do agree but when you look at it I think they did ignore him because he wasn't one of the 'originals" which I think is silly truth be told. The guys accepted him as one of the group why couldn't the media?

If you look at the media today they still do the same thing. When there is a group they always single out one to focus on and eventually that one departs to become a star and leave the group behind.

I hate the media. Except for all of the people who recorded the Beatles way back when so I can enjoy them now. LOL

It’s good to dream

reply

Sorry it took so long for me to reply, wobby1. That's a beautiful excerpt from John's final interview about Paul. Thank you so much.

I agree with you too, holycow. The media are a bunch of moronic animals. As for the guys, they were like that with Ringo in the beginning. But as time went by as he proved how great he is at drumming and what a good friend he was, the three of them loved him.

reply

I just learned that they're doing a duet on Ringo's next album.

Sorry, I don't know how to cut and paste but here's the link.

reply

Oh ok. Thank you so very much, arb. I was wondering how you make the link thing work. Someone said cut and paste but I don't think it works the way they put it. And yes, that's the article! Again, thank you!

reply

Welcome. Some boards have auto-parse. They recognize the http:// paste and make it a link. This one is manual (kinda retarded for 2009). British you see. Useless.

Just a line, not really British, it's a homemade kluge passing as content to get you to watch the ads. Oh, and the ad servers are notoriously lackadaisical, taking up to 2 minutes just to get their attention while the content remains unusable. I've complained to management until my fingers bled for them to bring their ad contractors up to reasonable quality of service. Lotta good it does, keeps getting worse.

reply

Oh I see. Very tough. Btw, if you don't mind me asking and I apoligize if it's a rhetorical question but are you from the UK? Over here, it's kinda hard when it comes to that system and I can understand how it can be sooooo retarded as you say. My mom and I would almost pull out our hair when they keep trying to change it up a bit. I tell ya', some computers these days just like to mess with our heads and makes us go into a rage.

Yeah. Some websites I know do that. Like there's this one called www.NKOTB.com(stands for New Kids On The Block, another band, aside from The Beatles, that I've grown to adore very much) and whenever typing a link to another site for info or something, it automatically make it into a clickable link. One time, I typed my Twitter name and it showed up clickable.

reply

Actually I AM from UK, about 200 years ago. Got the Austin Powers teeth to prove it. I look like Patrick Stewart, complete with the hairline.

When I do the lines from HELP, I do them in the voices of the characters, so well their own mothers couldn't tell the difference. I also do Ian McDiarmid, The Emperor from Star Wars, and Rex Harrison.

Last night I solved the IMDB sluggishness. I googled "specificclick" and the principal entries were how to disable it. IOW, I'm not the only person it annoys. It's spyware, tracking and reporting everything you do on this site. If you block its 3 cookie servers, it can't keep track of who you are and gives up.

I was a computer engineer before that got outsourced to China. Can't well fathom how folks who aren't get by. This stuff is so complex and SOOO devious. All this American rig. Wrong voltage.

reply

Intriguingly awesome! Cool look. Oh and if you don't mind me saying, I'm from the US.

Lol! Love it when you do the lines from this movie! You do them well. They're very memorable.

Wow. IMDB is something else. Ugh!

Sorry it's been difficult.

reply

It's OK to be from the US. Everybody has to be from somewhere.

Doing movie lines drives my brother crazy. He never gets them so I always have to explain. I should just give up, but at 63 I'm afraid if I don't use my memory I'll lose it.

reply

That's true.

Lol! Yeah, I'd say things that annoy the heck out of my brother, too! And whenever I'm talking, even in a conversation, and he interrupts me, I'd strangle him and then have to have a minute or so to think about what I was saying earlier. Sometimes, I have short term memory loss. And I'm 18! It's just crazy. Lol! But yeah, you certainly do the lines very well and no them by heart.

reply

When you've been watching it for 45 years, you'll do as well or better than I do. And coincidentally, be the exact same age I am now.

Cable History Channel is starting a new Beatles documentary tonight. Hope you can catch it.

reply

Indeed. I have yet to see it 45 more years and get into it a little more. I love it.

Yeah. I know all about the brand new Beatles documentary coming on the History Channel. I think it's called "Beatles On Record". It's about how the guys thought of their music and how they wrote it with their talented, unique ablities to project addicting melodies. Maybe the reason the THC is showing them is because they are branded somewhere in history and pop culture that will forever be special. I'm definetly watching it. They are the masters of music.

Btw, in going on the subject to this post, don't you think it's great that the two of them are growing old together while being blessed with a lot of years on their hands, making music, individually or together, and continuing to support eachother like always?
This may seem a bit strange but I was watching a few of "The Yellow Submarine" clips and videos on YouTube. It had the song "When I'm 64". I just thought about how bittersweet yet a blessing that both Paul and Ringo made it way pass 64. Plus, it's kinda funny how in the montage of the song in the movie they depict the guys at age 64 with long gray/white hair, long white beards, hunched over, and all. And you see Paul and Ringo today, and they don't look anywhere near like that! A couple of wrinkles and some gray hair, but still look great. In other words, they're not exactly OLD OLD OLD OLD like how they use to make it seem to be. Back then, if you were in your 50s, 60s, and further up, you would be considered VERY old. Not anymore today. Lol! Glad those two manage to keep their appearances nice and lovely.

Yes, they are great.

reply

History Channel screwed up the promo. They've been saying "tonight" all day, but it's not until Wednesday. Reruns early morning Thursday, again Sunday afternoon. They gave me the impression it was a series but it is just a one-hour show. How they can cover the Beatles' catalog in one hour, but we'll have to take what we can get.

I've seen a few of my band mates from back then. We're all the same age, about 64. Except for one bass player and myself, they are all unrecognizably old. I'm no moptop either. Beard would be white if I let it grow. Hair might be white if it grew at all.

We don't know that Paul and Ringo don't dye their hair. Fair to guess that when we see them in public they have expensive makeup people working for them. So they probably look better than they do.

.....And still the same as they was before they was.

reply

I know! Sometimes, they announce programs wrong! It's so annoying! And I thought it would last like 2 or 3 hours. But, I was bummed when I saw that it was 1 hour. Oh well.

Exactly. I guess when guys age, their change to being lighter, unless they dye their hair. Btw, you have bandmates? Cool! How did that happen?

And yes. Paul and Ringo both have more than enough money to afford stylists, specialists, and others to do their hair, make up, etc. Also, I'm saying their appearance and well being seems to be very good when they themselves keep themselves looking healthy and all.
What you think?

reply

How did I get bandmates? By being in 9 bands over 10 years. (I earlier said a dozen, but that was a roundoff.) Played private parties, frathouses, small public venues, dance clubs, TV x2, a casino in Reno, Hawaii military clubs, Diamond Head Crater Festival x3, and the ultimate, warmup for the Doobie Brothers (1974).

Check it out. I'm more famous than Paul McCartney. I wrote a song in 1968 that's still in current release, sells in 5 countries, and nets about $100/yr in royalties. If Paul had only written one song, 40yr ago, and nobody had ever heard of him, he wouldn't still be making $100/yr off of it. Therefore, I'm more famous than Paul. So I famous am.

I'm glad to see Paul and Ringo aging gracefully, still active, and most of all still alive. Losing one's contemporary cultural icons is rather an ominous sign that one is nearing the same fate.

reply

Saw the special. Will watch it again Sunday afternoon. But as I suspected/forecast, it was way too fast-forward to cover 8 years in one hour. Should have been no less than 3.

It was only 8 years? Seemed like a lifetime when it was happening. They have a song about that, "In My Life". Prescient. Haunting.

"I know I'll always stop and think about them." I can't go over that line without crying. What depth from guys so young. That's what blew me away about Buffalo Springfield too. They were the same age.

No matter how old I get, I'll always be in awe of what young guys feel and express.

reply

Wow! You serious?! That's pretty awesome! I had no idea you did all that, been in many bands, and done amazing things with the music. Cool!

Lol! You're more famous than Paul, eh? Interesting.

Oh yes. And Paul and Ringo have proven that you're never too old to still keep on doing what you love best and it looks as if they don't feel old unless they feel like it. And they DON'T and I'm proud that they still have that energy left in them. And I'm especially glad that they're still alive, healthy, and pressing on. Man, God have really blessed them with many, many wonderful years to come and still make great music. Best of all, they're going through it together, from 40+ years ago to now and forever. That article that I was telling you about that you helped put the link up when I didn't know how said that Ringo has an album coming out next January and that Paul is helping him out with it. It called Paul 'former bandmate', and I know he is but the way they put it in the article didn't look right. In a sense, he should've been called fellow Beatle or long time friend. Or maybe it was irrelevant but still. Oh well. But, you're right. They're both aging gracefully and wonderfully. And still young at heart and their old selves as always from what I've seen.

reply

If John can be more famous than Jesus, I can be more famous than Paul.

What the Beatles did for me and why I feel so close to them, was open up a whole decade of fantastic experiences (in music) which otherwise would never have happened.

reply

Absolutely.

reply

Hey. Recently, I saw Ringo on Jay Leno(I missed some of the other appearances he made last week) performing with Ben Harper with a song from his new album, Y Not. He looks great and in nice shape.

I also caught a glimpse of Paul at this year's Golden Globes. He, too, looked nice. And Nancy was there with him. Lucky woman. And I noticed that he was wearing one of those little reddish-orange ribbons like most people were wearing who were there. I think it's for the Haiti Relief and Donation. I think he was one of the famous people that donated to the relief. If that's the case, bless him. And that reminds me. Earlier that same night that I saw Ringo on Leno, I also saw him as one of the celebrities urging people to help out in the tragedy on the Larry King show that was doing a telethon for Haiti, The Red Cross, and UNICEF Foundations event.(Btw, I'm a Red Cross supporter.)

I'm so proud of both of them. Taking part in helping people that were devestated in an awful disaster and letting them know, along with others around the world, that 'We Care'. I've never been so happy to be a Fab Four fan. May God bless them.

Larry King interviewed Ringo and Paul together in 2007. At one point in the interview, Larry calls Ringo "George" and Paul gets angry, it's kind of adorable. Here's the clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7HEJAQK3SE
Larry King was a bad interviewer, but it's still really nice to see Paul and Ringo together.

CALM DOWN...okay, well, he doesn't get Hulk Angry, but he is obviously annoyed. He plays it off as a joke with Ringo, but just look how quick he is to defend him...

I was just saying they're cute.

Bustin' chops.

reply

Yeah, simultaneous. I'd seen that clip before and it's adorable. I can't believe Larry called him 'George'. Ringo may have thought it was a little funny but Paul seemed a bit offended. He didn't seem that angry but insulted. And yes he did seemed so quick to defend him. It's almost as if he's a bit overprotective of him. Well, if you've known someone for more than 50 years and that person has always been an easy target humor and underratedness, you'd probably defend them too. And forgive me but speaking of that, is it me or that not just Paul, but even John and George, especially George, were kind of protective of Ringo before, during, and after the Beatles? I don't know why I think that but it seems like either of the guys get a bit defensive when someone makes fun of Ringo with cruel or pointless jokes. I know that it looks like the guys kinda push him around and regard as the goofy odd-guy-out of the group. But, I heard that all three guys LOVED him so much. They probably LOVED him to where they wanted to protect him like precious treasure. And though this movie is fictional, there were some scenes where the guys got worried or scared to insanity when Ringo was extremely close to danger. It is said that Ringo is the glue that kept the other three together for that long. Do I have that all wrong?

Back to the clip. I also found it so sweet when Paul was describing the last time he'd seen George and he was holding his hand. He described it by holding Ringo's hand and stroking it. Someone made a remark that he seems to be stroking his hand absent minded and you do that with someone you care about. I think later on in the interview, when the two of them were engaging in the usual cute antics, Paul reached for his hand again, and Ringo patted/caressed his hand. You can tell the chemistry between those two is still going strong.

Have you heard of the song "Walk With You" by Ringo featuring Paul from his recent Y Not album? It's a beautiful song. I listened to that song like 2 million times. I never get tired of listening to it. It's a beautiful song about life, love, and friendship. Go listen to it. You'll love it.

reply

PAUL WAS NOT OFFENDED...what are you kids on these days?

"We all shine on"

reply

I think you're right, gljbradley. They were like brothers...of course they can tease each other, but anyone else isn't allowed to. And, yes, I do believe that Ringo was the heart of The Beatles. He still got on with all of them even after the breakup. He gets so little credit, but I know that without him The Beatles would not have stayed together nearly as long. He's Ringo, how can you not love him?

Their friendship is SO sweet. I loved that they still banter after all of these years, and the hand holding really shows how much they truly love each other. I've heard Walk With You, too (I have Y Not). It's one of the SWEETEST songs I've ever heard, and I'm glad you brought it up. I can't stop listening to it.

I can't get over how close they still are...it's something I hope I can have when I'm older. It's magic. But I'm a little crazy.

Those are beautiful videos. Made me cry. I get a bit emotional when I see vids concerning the guys' friendships with one another.

And people say Ringo's music isn't good. They're full of IT! His music is very beautiful! Those two songs used in those videos by him are some of the most beautiful songs he'd ever did. And the friendship shown in those vids are spetacular. There should be more Fab Four friendship/bromance videos. I think the love they all shared was something that's deeper and only either of them knew. I personally believe not even all of the girlfriends, wives, and other people in their lives could know and feel what the four of them have been through together. Only those four guys know what it's truelly like to be a Beatle. They probably could've thought what the other one was thinking and sorta finished eachother's sentences.

I think Paul at one point said, "We're all the same person. We're really just four parts of one."

Lennon + McCartney + Harrison + Starr = LOVE

Get Ringo's book "Postcards From the Boys." Paul, John and George knew that Ringo liked to get picture postcards so when any of them was traveling they would send him a postcard, with a funny message. He kept these and published a book with reproductions of many of the cards, with his own comments. They are all funny, even the way they are addressed are often funny, and these continued after the band broke up, which proves that they all loved each other through the years. I love to page through this book, and laugh and cry a little bit at the same time.

Awww. I gotta get that book. Yeah. They loved him and he loved them. They all loved eachother. He said that he was born the only child and now he has three brothers.
