Bored?

I finally got to watch Help! yesterday. I was pretty excited to see it, but I got the feeling that The Beatles were pretty bored while making it. They didn't have the same liveliness and fun spirit that they had while making A Hard Days Night. Anyone else agree?

Well they've always been a spot droll. It's a Brit thing. But one of the lads is said to have expressed they felt like extras in their own movie. It's also said they were stoned on their asses the whole time.

I think they were a bit full of themselves. They resented being teamed with some of the sharpest comic actors in Britain? That's not the spirit. Lester's troupe was the Brit equivalent of Lorne Michaels' second season SNL cast.

I can definitely see that.

And just to be clear: in no way was I bashing on The Beatles. They are not trained actors or anything. I just loved A Hard Day's Night so much and was wondering if anyone else noticed the same thing while watching this film.

They were stoned out of their minds, by their own admission.

I totally agree. Help! is more like a prolonged Monkees television show episode, it does not have the athmosphere of AHDN present.

Whoever created the Monkees' TV show must have watched Help and said, "let's make that a show!"

I've seen the future and I've left it behind.

Yeah, now that you mention it, the bad acting is one of the reasons why I didn't enjoy this film as much...
I think Ringo was the only good Beatle actor in this, since he actually tried to look scared with the situation he was in throughout the movie. George, too, to an extent.

Whoever created the Monkees' TV show must have watched Help and said, "let's make that a show!"

According to Paw (from his Music Movies review on ThatGuywiththeGlasses.com), that's exactly what happened!

I agree in the first part they look rather aloof and disinterested by the plot. But in the second (or rather, third) part, and basically everytime there's a song playing, I was glad to find them in a more lively and happy state of mind. They are running and fooling around again, like in A Hard Day's Night. And, with the exception of Paul, maybe, who hasn't the Grandfather story to carry this time, they're still all pretty funny to watch.
