It is loaded with major stars. I have seen it many times and have finally gotten to the point where I can watch the end without my eyes tearing. Afterward you may want to watch Jesus of Nazareth with Robert Powell. Also loaded with stars, Jesus of Nazareth has to me been the most compelling telling of the story ever put on film. Thereafter, Powell seems to own the role.
ah so u think I shud watch this before Jesus of Nazareth? I haven't had time to watch either yet but am looking forward to both
Oh good, am glad it is emotional! Its so easy to just play out the life of Christ as basically everyone knows the story etc etc but to really put passion into it and getting people to really feel for Christ is a great thing
Yes, a lot of people seem to share your views on Powell! He was on Parkinson lately and he seems a genuinely nice guy. What he said about a photo of him in between takes, on the cross, with a fag in his mouth and slippers on his feet sounded funny! wud love to see that
Thanks for responding by the way!!
I don't often post anything on the boards of religious films because they usually just turn into religious arguments etc etc but I just needed to talk about this and Jesus of Nazareth! No1 has responded on the Jesus of Nazareth board yet tho

I thought the actor who played Judas was excellent. You could really see the jealousy and bitterness building up inside him throughout the film together with the fear that Jesus was going too far and wud cause a great deal of trouble
My only problem with the film was that Judas didn't hang himself!!
Of course the actor who played Jesus was great too!
And Telly Savalas as Pilate!!!Nice one
But where was John Wayne?? Was his role only small?
I really enjoyed the film, am looking forward to watching Jesus of Nazareth now!

John Wayne had a cameo role at the end of the film during the crucifixion. He was a roman soldier and his line was, "truly this man was the Son of God".
In the Greatest Story Ever Told, Jesus was portrayed by Max von Sydow. In 1973 Max played the title role in The Exorcist (Father Merrin). In a strange twist, that film probably caused more people to rethink their religious beliefs than either of these movies about the life of Jesus.
When you watch Jesus of Nazareth, you will notice Robert Powell almost never blinks his eyes. This is a cinematic acting technique intentionally employed perhaps to create a more mystical pretense to his characterization of Jesus.
I think Charlton Heston's depiction of John The Baptist is one of the best!
Some of his smart remarks back at King Herod were kind of humorous! He always seemed to have the last word and had the quickest, sharpest and straight to the point comebacks! My favorite scenes are the acinine interactions that they went through and John's persistence in getting Herod to repent! Love it!
