Something that's bugged me for years

There's a scene in this movie that I can't figure out. It shows a man,I believe he killed himself with a sword, anyway, he's lying at the bottom of the stairs that one had to ascend to sacrifice an animal. Does anyone know, does anyone have any idea just who he is and why he committed suicide?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this.

It was the cripple (Sal Mineo) whom Jesus cured in a synagouge. He didn't commit suicide. Shortly after Jesus left the temple for the Last Supper, a Roman army purged the place. The ex-cripple was among the victims, a sheep for the slaughter.

It was part of George Stevens bringing up his Dachau experiences in WWII.
