any idea why mgm would do back-to-back tales of the christ?

oh, they didn't do this one -- i confused the video/TV rights with the producing studio.

Also, 'King of Kings' wasn't an MGM production. They just released it, hoping to cash in on 'Ben-Hur' associations. It was totally a Samuel Bronston production, made in Spain.
