shareI found the movie its called "rocket to the moon" with Troy Donahue.
shareThe 1967 film "Rocket to the Moon" was loosely based on the Jules Verne story "From the Earth to the Moon".
There was also 1964's "First Men in the Moon" based on the H.G. Welles story "The First Men in the Moon"
Both films were set in the Victorian era.
You could also try "The Mouse on the Moon," a sequel to "The Mouse that Roared."
shareOf course, this movie is set in the modern day in the early '60s space race - but the country of Grand Fenwick is some 500 years behind the times.
I have to put in a word for 'The Wrong Box' (1966). The race is more a contest to be the last surviving member of a lottery/inheritance contract. A droll, death-themed Victorian farce with a great English cast.
Hi there,
There is another very funny, in the British way, road race film called
"Genevieve" from 1953. If you are into British films from this period, this is a must to either own or see. A real classic to many.

'Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines' is fantastic too - it is made along very similar lines to 'The Great Race' with a villainous pair played by Terry Thomas and Eric Sykes sabotaging every other entrant in the race in similar fashion to Professor Fate and Max - and coming off the worse for it.
And Genevieve is delightful - but a far more gentle, mannered, 1950s comedy. I will never forget Kay Kendall in the trumpet scene in this. It was brilliant.
