Typical conservative 60's crap from Universal

As with other Knotts star vehicles, this ultra cheap, quickly knocked out "comedy" is embarrassing in every way. Typical white, aged cast of what Universal considered "Average Americans". The cast trying to represent a wholsesome time. Like, 1911 or something! hahaha.

The last desperate act of a dying era. A unfunny disgrace in every way.

Awwww, c'mon... It was just another of his movies for kids.

Heck, in '66, we were still doing "Drop Drills" at school - getting into a crouched position with heads covered under our desks - so we'd know what to do in case of a nuclear blast. *LOL* (Remember the Volcano Drills on South Park? Heh heh heh...)

It was still innocent times for elementary school kids back then - even though the Beatles were beginning to change everything. ;-)

The original poster sounds like someone who needs to take a chill pill and get off their high horse. So you dont like the movie. Move on and dont make an ass of yourself, but if you did that, you couldnt feel important, then could you???

reply

The Ghost & Mr. Chicken is a FREAKING CLASSIC and yes, it does show a way of life gone by... It was clean and wholesome. Imagine, a male character blushing at the thought of "breasts". The only character around anymore that might is "Mr. Beans"...

Considering the post starts off with what can only be assumed to be formula and marketing attacks, it's pretty obvious it's the post of one of those high pedestal types.

It did seem like 1911 in this movie.

As for the rest of your comment consider this, it's a "typical case" of
"know your audience".
You might want to take a look a theater records in 1966. Where theaters were (downtown), and Who went to the movies.
Nothing disgraceful in making a story for the people paying money to see it in 1966. And a little town like Rachel, Kansas was probally EXACTLY like that.
But of course times have changed, and good, (or bad) and of course if such a story would be made today it would have added those elements you desire.
It's kind of like saying The Andy Griffith show was disgraceful.
Apples and Oranges.

I thought the movie did a good job of poking fun at that conservatism of middle America, maybe even mocking it or ridiculing it in subtle ways.

What you call the "last dying act of a dying era" was really just the beginning of a new era of movies that were increasingly critical of the prevailing conservative system.

reply

This movie was a ton of fun to watch as a kid. The whole theatre full of matinee attending kids loved it.
Loved the exaggeratedly shakey Don Knotts, the spooky settings, the campy actors...
The original poster must be a really miserable person to be so critical of a film never meant for the Cannes festival but meant to be just plain fun.

RIP Don Knotts, and thanks for those moments.

reply

I saw this movie when I was a kid. I loved it. It was clean, innocent humor and a lot of fun. My mom could send me to see a movie like this and not have to worry about "language, violence or adult situations." There should be some entertainment like this for children today. They grow up too fast and see too much that's not appropriate for them.

reply

With all due respect, you're an idiot. I mean, really. Ultra cheap?? Quickly knocked out?? These are criticisms? In what way? And it was set in a small Kansas town. What did you expect it to look like? Harlem? Jesus dude, I have nothing wrong with people criticizing movies and don't expect IMDB to be a fanclub site, but if these are the best criticisms you've got, I strongly recommend deleting your post and hoping people don't remember that you wrote it. You've totally just embarrassed yourself.

doctorbiobrain2005 could not have written any better.

It's the marriage scene between a MAN and a WOMAN the boiled the OP's butter. And no message about legalizing marijuana. The OP gripe-o-thon makes me love the movie more. Thanks!

this guys a troll, pay no attention to him. if he thinks this movie was the last of a dying breed, he's right, but this troll actually thinks this is a good thing.

I just watched the first episode of "the walking dead" on amc. about zombies. first scene features a 6 year old girl clutching a teddy bear, and a cop realizes something isn't right with her but he doesn't yet know about zombies, and he pulls out his pistol and shoots her point blank in the forehead, and they show the shot, the hole, and the girl falling backwards with blood spurting out the back of her head. now we know she's a zombie, but still, did it have to be a 6 year old girl? and this is on regular tv, not even an R rated movie. in my day, first time I heard a swear word even in the movies was john wayne saying "Hell". it just wasn't done. I'll take a "conservative" ghost and mr chicken any day over a "liberal" walking dead featuring the killing of a 6 year old little girl zombie.

it's funny I posted this so long ago, when I first watched the walking dead and was criticizing it for the little girl shooting. now it's probably my favorite show. but still, I miss those innocent old tv shows and movies. I'm watching right now, machete featuring all sorts of grotesque violence. but I dont' mind it really as it's sort of so over the top, it's kinda funny

1) Quickly knocked out? - If so, it is because of the talented cast and crew.
They knew what they were doing, and worked hard to get it done quickly.

2) Typical white, aged cast? - Are we a disgruntled non-white, non-aged person ??

3) The cast trying to represent a wholsesome time? - First, learn how to spell.
Second, this movie IS representative of wholesome America in 1966!

4) Like, 1911 or something! - Good God man(?), 1911?, were you alive in 1911?
Are you crazy??

5) The last desperate act of a dying era. A unfunny disgrace in every way. - Well,
now I have heard everything. You probably didn't like the Andy Griffith show
either, huh??.

6) You are entitled to your opinion, but it might be nice to know what movies of
the same time period that YOU DO think are good movies. HA-HA-HA-HA

Somebody that has a beef with TGAMC needs a lot of theraphy (SP); I hope you have gotten that help in the past few years.

The OP is an effing troll. This was a wonderful and hilarious kid's movie. I nearly wet my 12 year panties when I first saw it; that's how hard I laughed. I wish more of today's kid movies were this funny.

reply

[deleted]

I almost wet myself too, when I first watched this. But it was because it was/is scary! I was ten when I saw this on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The whole school discussed it the next day. In those days we had five channels so everyone watched the same shows and movies.

Let me guess. The original poster hates America, Republicans, Southerners, The American Flag, God Bless America and refuses to eat Mom's apple pie.

OP, if you're still reading the posts connected to this thread: Quit being such a curmudgeon! You sound like sort of the reverse of the person who complains because things have changed so much. Maybe you can find that type of person and have a private debate over whose lives suck the most: one who's stuck in the past or one that thinks the present isn't changing enough.
