It's the same kind of humor Bob Hope excelled at. In fact, if you liked this film, you may want to check out Hope's "Ghost Breakers". I refer to this sub-genre of comedy as "haunted house" or "fright" comedy, in which much of the humor comes from the comedian's frantic reactions to the scary situations. Laurel and Hardy did a great turn at it in "The Laurel and Hardy Murder Case", and Abbott and Costello practically made the genre their own with the numerous horror-comedies they made, with "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" being perhaps the most famous.
