Are we a rare group?

First, let me start by letting it be known that I am a 27 year old male. Up until about three weeks ago, I had never heard of Russ Meyer or any of these movies. I was writing something on another board and a quote from a particular "White Zombie" track seemed fitting. I was searching for the lyrics to get the quote exactly right, and I came upon a site that told where that particular sound clip was sourced from. It said Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. I thought "what in the world is that? I think I've seen that phrase before..". So I search. I come here. I read some reviews. Sounds interesting. Some of the reviews mentioned some of his other movies. They too sounded interesting. On a whim I thought "I'm going to buy that movie so I can see and hear who actually first said these things that I've been hearing on this song for the past 10 years! Then on another whim, I bought more of the movies. The first one arrived. First up? Up! It starts up and says "This movie has been rated X. No one under 17 admitted." I thought "huh, that's interesting. This is the first X rated movie I've ever seen that was not just straight up pornographic.". **SPOILERS** Two of my favorite parts are when he says "Get your ass in the car!" and the camera is aimed right at her ass as she is getting in. The other part is when another woman walks up and says "Hi" and the camera is aimed right at her crotch the moment she says hi and I thought "ain't that the truth.." So fitting that scene is.

Next movie? Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens . I liked this movie just as much.

Next movie? Motor Psycho. Extremely good movie. Highly underrated. Highly unknown. What a gem. I was very surprised as this being released in 1965, it had that Nam vet be the way he was. Was it a early sign of things to come? By the end of this movie, I sure did want one of those ~'65 model Land Cruisers. That thing sure looked good.

Next up?(hasn't arrived yet) Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (I posted this here because the other boards don't seem to have any activity.) I'm sure I'll like this movie just as much if not more..

This brings me to the thought I was initially thinking about. I really like these movies. But I feel I have no one to enjoy them with. Everyone I know, I'm nearly certain they wouldn't appreciate them.

It appears to me that these movies are not for people who are conservative, closed minded, uptight, or religious. Also people who would initially prejudge this movie before even seeing it or quick to dismiss it before even having given it a chance.

I may be considered jaded, cynical, critical, and negative. I've been told that I "have a bad attitude". I have not been to the movie theater since 1999. The last three movies I ever saw there were South park(friends "made me" go), Fight Club, and the Matrix. South park wasn't funny, the Matrix annoyed the hell out of me by attempting to be so cool. And Fight Club? I don't even want to think about it.

Up until then, I had seen a lot of movies. Action, comedies, horrors. I don't watch any of these new movies coming out. I just don't like them. Same as how I don't like this "emo" type music these days and didn't like the grunge music before that.

I really like movies from the 1960's and 1970's. I enjoy and appreciate the nostalgic aspects to them. Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Deliverance, Dr Strangelove, Soylent Green, The Omega Man, Planet of the Apes, Two Lane Blacktop, The Gumball Rally, The Kentucky Fried Movie. And one '80's movie. Neighbors . If you haven't seen that one, it's a good one. Something else I really like. Those Three Stooges shorts from the 1930's and '40's.

So what appeals to me about these Russ Meyer movies? I do like and appreciate the gratuitous nudity. Makes the movie very enjoyable to watch. I'm OK with the violence. I'm OK with the rape. I don't might the parts that aren't "politically correct". Just satisfying movies to watch.

So back to me sharing these movies with others. I have never met anyone who is like me. I have never known anyone who likes the same things I do or is into the same things I am. Or even someone who thinks like I do or sees things like I do. Talk about feeling like an outsider and isolated.

So do any fans of Russ's movies have anything in common with me in addition to these movies? Have you ever known anyone besides yourself who also likes these movies? Out of all the people I currently know and have known, I'm nearly certain none of them would appreciate these movies.

I guess I just basically want to know more about others who enjoy these movies so by knowing that, maybe I can identify or be more able to know of others who would enjoy these movies.

Care to tell a little about yourselves? Maybe there just aren't many like us? Just how unique are we? Anything theories or observations you have made?

I'm an "Enneagram Type Five". I've been all 9 of those levels at one time or another. Those words describe me exactly.

Are you by chance a Type Five also?

The site I was referring to that led me to these great movies:

I think with Russ Meyer one of the major drawcards is the absolutely frenetically paced editing which just seems so smooth. Most films these days really don't know how to pace themselves, as editing is seen as much less glamorous (perhaps even important) than acting, directing, writing or cinematography. Just my 2c.

Russ Meyer movies are definitely not for the conservative, politically correct or easily offended. In my experience, Russ Meyer fans generally tend to be people who are liberal, quirky, and have a bawdy, twisted sense of humor. Often sex or toilet humor, though not of the American Pie/Scary Movie teen comedy style that's recently been in vogue. People who enjoy watching cars and huge boobs, and thus enjoy watching old campy trash, B movies or drive-in movies where all these elements feature in spades!

I do know a few other people who enjoy Russ Meyer movies, but they're generally all perverted freaks like me. Sometimes I get a kick out of showing Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! or Motor Psycho to a buddy who I know will NOT appreciate the craziness he is about to witness! Hehe.

By the way, I really love at least three of the classic 70s movies you mentioned: Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter and Deliverance. Neighbors is that very black comedy from the early 80s, with John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd, yeah? I found that very funny and enjoyable too. I hated The Matrix movies too.

For what it's worth, I'm somewhere between Level 5 and Level 6 on the Enneagram, though I'll likely end up a Level 9 some day.

Probably a rarer group than we would have been ten/twenty/thirty years ago. As a female I imagine I am in a pretty rarified group as a Meyer fan. I don't love all of the movies, but Pussycat is about as good as explotation gets. And Tura Satana is a goddess. I like movies where the women are tough and preditory and the men don't stand a chance.
If you get a chance you should pick up the Russ Meyer bio, Big Bosums and Square Jaws, it is, as the girls would say, a real gas.

I adore Russ Meyer's films especially because of the kitchy nature of them.
My local film shop has just started stocking them all much to my happiness as the shop which was there before had no interesting films at all.

I'm conservative and religious, but I am a bit quirky with twisted sense of humor. So I guess that is why I liked this movie, LOL. I watched when TCM showed 2 of Meyers movie's a few months ago. This one and I believe the name of the other one was Mudhoney. And to the orignal poster yeah I havent been to a movie theater since 1998. I got tired a wasting my money to sit in dried coca-cola for movies that wasnt worth the hassle of going to see in the first place. I've found it better to rent and if I like it then buy a copy later.

Also, I am the ultimate hater of The Matrix movies.

Most of the liberals I know are very uptight and have no sense of humor at all.

As usual meades the OP is correct and you have it backwards.

you haven't demonstrated any ability to laugh at yourself meades. Somebody says they don't like country music you are all over them. Why? Isn't their taste an individual choice? why must everyone like what you like? it is not all about you.

Well, I'm pretty left-leaing (although I'm a natural skeptic of ANY political party), and I find these movies terrific.

I think the truth is that both political parties (and even groups that are apolitical) are made up of some thoughtful people and some shallow people. There are just as many killjoy liberals as killjoy conservatives, they just aren't on TV as much.

Personally, I have only one political opinion and I don't think either party respects it: total personal freedom.

I could not agree more, well said and well put, I love this movie too and it is just barmy and a bit of fun I sometimes have to laugh at some bits too.. It is a no brainer to suggest liberals could watch it without all the political correctness and hoo ha that they would fire off!

I'm 21 and while I've only seen 2 Russ Meyer movies, I enjoy watching them whenver they're on. I just think his movies are fun, not to be taken so seriously, and sometimes there are really clever dialogue. It's like a good ride that your not sure why you're there or where you're going. Just enjoy the ride.

Hmmm...two people have written that "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! appears not to be for the conservative, close-minded, uptight, or religious. I am a huge conservative, and I am also religious. Two out of four. I am even old. I'm probably the same age as the women in this movie, maybe a tad younger, but I loved it. I can't speak for the rest of the films listed, I haven't seen them, but not all people are as black or white as you might imagine. Our culture takes such pride in such shallow accomplishments (looks, money, weight, connections) that I like to go against the grain and make up my own mind. I hate people telling me how I'm supposed to think. Anyway, I enjoyed reading your comments, I even used your link. (I'm a cross between a 1 and a 4. Go figure.) Oh, and as someone mentioned, FPKK will be aired on Turner Classic Movies sometime in Oct. 2006.

Toycoon... I am a homo sapien. I happen to love Russ Meyer films and I loved Fight Club.... I must be insane...

I too have the same taste in movies, although I really liked Fight Club. I found Pussycat through Thunderkiss '65 just like you except I had to buy a region 2 disc and a player that would play it just so i could watch it. I think all the work involved just to hear the words "I never try anything, I just do it," and "You want to try me?" was worth it.

Did you happen to watch Rob Zombie's two movies he made being a fellow White Zombie fan?

Why do you have to be old to enjoy good art? YOu guys are starting to make

basically you owe everything to Rob Zombie, but you want to differentiate your self. Type 5 what the hell are you talking about. I guess we all got F'd in the A.

I think aside from the females who have posted and have stated that they would have to be in the rarest group of all, there then comes me.

I am Australian, so the liberal party is your equal to the conservative republicans, im roman catholic, i love watching the kind of movies you hate, but even though i havent yet seen them, i am enamoured at the fact that i could watch these and when i do, i know ill like them, i love boobs, i love violence, and i love a bit of exploitive showing of women being raped, its a thrill, so how rare a person am i, maybe im just a big old sicko, i dunno.

It's amazing how popular these films really are. Along with Jack Hill, I've been an avid Meyer fan for as long as I can remember, and it was only up until recently that people I know started name dropping Meyer into conversations.

I can appreciate not enjoying or having any desire in watching recently made movies, but in my personal opinion, you're really missing out!

Tarantino especially is a director you should really watch. Particularly Kill Bill and Death Proof. It's astonishing how 70's exploitation has had a rivival in the past decade.

reply

I am interested in knowing what huge Meyer fans think of Tarintino's films. I'm a Tarintino fan, though I didn't think too much of Deathproof, mostly because the huge bouts of dialogue that seemed to be a bunch of boring BS used specifically to create excuses about why certain off the wall things happened in the good bits, which really didn't need to be explained, especially in that style of film. It would have been fine had Tino made them as sophisticated and stylized as the ones from his classis movies, but I think he dropped the ball with these. That aside I haven't seen any of Meyer's films but I just bought Pussycat today. It was because of Tarrintino and Rob Zombie that I even knew these films existed. So yeah, what do you guys think of Tarrintino?
