Where was it filmed?

The background looks like the San Bernadino mountains, and the desert reminds me of Barstow or Victorville. Anybody know?

I may be wrong, but the drive down to the lake at the begining of the film looks like a road I've been on at Mono Lake, near Lee Vining. The town where they gas up however is not familiar.

Probably.

It's on t.v. right now. I'll keep a look out for Mono Lake, but so far it looks like the Mojave is a good guess. The mountains are too small to be the Sierras and I saw a Joshua tree earlier, which I think grow only in the southeast of the state.

The town is Randsburg California. The house I believe is on Neuralia road near Red Rock Canyon Park. There's a place with an old well and tank like the movie. If it's not the spot it's a ringer for it. It is definitely in Fremont valley as I recognize some of the mountains in the background.

Since they were filming in the valley the dry lake race scene was probably shot on Koehen lake. It's about 15 miles from Randsburg.

The lake I'm not sure. It could be Little Lake.

The "gas" station used in the movie is still there. If you look closely you'll notice the power is disconnected from the building. The power meter is missing. Last time I was there it was still disconnected.
