terence stamp

is sooo good in this role. man, i knew his 60s movies were better then the stuff he's usually in nowadays but man i forgot what a good actor he can be when he gets the chance. it's so rare an actor can be so sympathetic and intimidating in a credible way as he is in this film.

Agree - he is fantastic. At the start I thought Stamp is far too good lookng to play Freddie.....but he loses his looks and just becomes a pathetic but somehow menacing (yet sympathetic) creature.

Even his accent as he tries to put on airs and graces, and then when his angry, his proper east end accent appearing in his rage.... i loved it!

Great performance....

Work is the curse of the drinking classes...

reply

Agreed. He was incredible, but a lot better looking than book Fredrick.

reply

He was perfect, one of the best performances I've ever seen, I honestly can't believe that Samantha Eggar was nominated for an Oscar and he wasn't, one of the worst snubs ever.

reply

I agree!

I don't know if he was poorly paid for his films, but being in the disastrous Modesty Blaise after this film seems a desperate choice.

reply

Meh, Modesty Blaise is fun in a campy, 60s, mod kinda way. Don't forget he also did Far from the Madding Crowd and Poor Cow not long after this movie, and those were both excellent IMO.

He really was amazing in this. The way he pressed his hand to his mouth after he'd held it to hers (him or direction?), and so many scenes in which you could see lust, anguish, torment and disgust all flicker across his face in seconds. He's quite an actor.

His piercingly-cold soulless eyes, just chills you right to the bone marrow.

You stupid, clumsy labouring-boy.
