what happened at the end?

As someone who does not play cards, what happened at the end? I know he loses but did he have him beat at some point?

I found it suitable that he didn't win, unlike some viewers. He had to learn the "lesson of life".

The Kid has him beat the entire hand up until the 9D. Lancey made a call he shouldn't at the beginning off the hand.

It was a great ending with the Man having an 8, 9, 10, Q of Diamonds showing the Jack of Diamonds in the hole. I after the last draw they could have added some suspense by having the Kid look at his card showing the third ace in the full house with no one else knowing. That way the audience would know the Man would have had to have had the Jack of Diamonds to win because then a straight or flush would not have won for him.
Another thing would be for the Man to have showing a 8, 10, Q of diamonds and the last draw be a 9 of diamonds meaning he made an inside straight flush on the last draw.
Just a couple of thoughts.

My bad on the Man's last hand because he did draw the 9 of diamonds last which meant he made an inside straight. Of course he would also have had a good hand if he drew another diamond for a flush or another 9 which would have given him a straight.
Still it would have been nice for the audience to know possible by a thought read to know the kid had a full house right after the last draw.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Well I play poker and for one of the best poker movies ever, I was glad that the Kid didn't show the full house, because it was obvious by the way he bet.. just like there was no way Robinson would go over the top with just a flush.

The movie/book is about two great poker players going at it, and great poker players don't go all in on two pair against a possible flush, taking into account the massive amount of money they are playing for.

Each thought the other was full of it. Edward G. WAS more or less full of it until the last card.
