Does anyone know why they didn't use chips instead of cash? In a game where they hired two professional dealers and are playing for thousands of dollars (back when that was a lot of money), you would think they would use chips. Do you think that the director felt that having piles of cash instead of little round discs would have more of a visual impact? Or were chips just not used back then as widely as they are now?
Back then a lot of private games used cash. Doyle Brunson has talked about how much better the game is now that everybody uses chips because it's easier to take people's money. It's easier to lose a stack of chips than a stack of cash.
Yea, and back then chips were easier to counterfeit than money as well. Also brunson said it's a lot easier to see and count chips than random dollars all over the place in a pile. Also, the money is kept in people's pockets or in a safe place. So a random guy would have a tougher time pulling a robbery. Chips>>>>>>>Dollars.
Main reason why chips don't matter in this movie is because they are constantly betting with money off the table anyways. This is basically cheating imo, You could just leave enough for the blind every hand and check it down when you have nothing and when you get a hand pull it all out of your pocket and put them all in.
open stakes was (is?) still used in home games where they can take money from off the table and bet it. same with using cash, home games back then would still use cash.
