'Dead' decks?

Before the start of the game, the Kid and the Man inspect the decks that will be used by smelling them. They declare some of them "dead" and then I believe those decks are not used. What do they mean exactly by this?

I may have found an answer myself for those interested. I listened to the DVD Commentary with Phil Gordon and the host of of Celebrity Poker Showdown and Gordon said maybe it was smell for fresh glue, a sign that the deck might have been opened and fixed and then re-sealed. But he said first he really didn't know for sure.

Anyone have a better idea than this?
