Why Did They Say The Tanks Were The REAL Things?

I was very surprised to see in the extra features that an interviewee claimed that all the tanks used in the movie were the actual parts of the same tanks that were used in the real battle. But they couldn't be! Being a wargamer and having a a good familiarity with tank design, I noticed immediately that the movie tanks bore little resemblance to their actual real-life counterparts!

So why did he say that the tanks were the real ones from the actual WWII battles?
