The Jet Pack

It was used mostly in the first few episodes --- and which others? Seems to me we didn't see it much after season 1. I thought the Jet Pack was the coolest thing ever. When I was a kid, during the time Lost in Space first aired, we thought eventually everyone would have one!

It was featured in Blast of into Space The Junkman though heard and somewhat seen The Thief of Outer Space

The problem w said pack is fuel consumption was great You could only stay in the air so long

So until hover tech is invented as in Back To The Fuure the closest you are gonna have are those water jet packs UNLIMITED Fuel but you are tethered

reply

Yeah, we really thought that Jet Pack was gonna be in everyone's garage for quick commuting! Too bad about the limited range and fuel consumption. It still is fun to imagine having one.

Oddly enough, the Jet Pack was not a jet, but rocket. The one seen on LIS was the Bell Rocket Rocket Belt. It could fly for 21 seconds on 5 gallons of hydrogen peroxide.

Today, there actually is a jet pack that uses a jet engine - the T-73 jet pack runs on jet fuel and can fly for about 9 minutes.

Not that it matters --- but I wonder how far you could go in 9 minutes with a one of these jet packs? It would be a one way trip I'm sure unless another belt was at the destination!

Thanks for the background on this --- crazy to think that was an actual rocket belt seen in the stock footage on LIS! Yikes!

reply

Apparently, the T-73 jet pack can go about 11 miles with a maximum speed of 83 miles per hour, which isn't too bad and might be pretty useful in combat/rescue scenarios.

You don't really need another jet pack at your destination, you just need another five gallon can of fuel. It actually should be possible to carry more fuel up to a point, although the extra weight would affect performance.

Cool! It would be neat if it could be used for rescue situations! I'm thinking about the scene where John rescued Panny when she got lost on the tortoise. He flip down a little seat on the back of the jet pack. Was that fiction I wonder or was a passenger seat like that developed in reality?

There was a two man Jet Pack called the Bell "Pogo." It was designed to be used on the Moon, but never was. It could and did fly on Earth, though. It was more of a "flying platform" that used jet pack technology.

Here are some photos:

Oh Wow! Thanks for link!

I had no idea that people were still making and flying these! I thought it was strictly a thing of the past --- but the fact that there are enthusiasts out there actually flying rockets belts gives me hope for the future!

There's also something out there now called a "hydrojet pack."

Basically, it's a jet ski engine with a long hose attached to it. The jet of water coming out of the hose is powerful enough to lift a man, though he is tethered to the engine and water supply by the hose.

In some configurations, this looks very similar to a jet pack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsucqVsso2A

In others, it looks more like a water jet powered snow board (known as a "Flyboard")

as many bad car drivers out there, I'd hate to see the skies filled with jet pack drivers, but its fun to imagine if everyone indeed did have their own jet pack, with rechargeable batteries similar to a Prius for commuting to work, school, etc.
Am i crazy to say somethings technology wise really haven't advanced too much in 50+ years?

Best Thing about the Jet Pack The music generally played with it Found out years later it was from another fox movie Beneath The Twelve Mile Reef

Always remembered that music cue along with the score when there was a heartfelt scene

"Nah Nah Nah Nah NAH Nah nah Nah Nah!

As I earlier posted Lost in Space if ANYTHING no matter how BAD the ep Recycled or otherwise

The music was ALWAYS dead on

The music was ALWAYS dead on

Agreed -- the best on TV ever! Thanks for mentioning the music that went along with the Jet Pack flights. I loved that music. Also, the other music you mentioned --- oh yes, more than anything that music makes me nostalgic for the good old childhood days! At home with Mom and Dad. Me and Sis allowed to eat our dinner in front of TV on Wednesday nights to watch LIS! Awwww....sigh.

reply

Here's one place the music is used in "Beneath the 12 Mile Reef." I'm not sure if there are others.

You are a fount of knowledge El! Thanks so much! I'm gonna see if I can get this movie on Netflix --- even if it's just to listen to the music. However, it looks good --- Robert Wagner, Terry Moore!

I used to refer to it as "The Angel"... I was only 3 when it came out.

It's so amazing that the jet pack was real. It also appears in the last episode.
