What do you think pipchicks tasted like?
???
shareLike ambrosia.
Probably like those powdered-sugar wedding cookies. Or lemon coolers. Yum!
shareI always thought of them tasting like PURE SUGAR like those Peeps you get around Easter.. probably the name... Peeps....PipChicks.
shareI too have always thought they would taste like Peeps.
I'll let you know when I come-up with a new signature, .
LOL That's the funny thing about Peeps, they don't have that much of a taste to them, but damn they are addicting when you start eating them, kinda like the pipchicks. Also the name... Peep-CHICKS.

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped pecans if desired, you can also use chopped anything... cherries, dates, chocolate chips???
Instructions:
1.In a 2 quart saucepan combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt.
2.Cook to hardball stage, (260 degrees), stirring only until sugar dissolves.
3.Meanwhile, as temperature of syrup reaches 250 degrees, beat egg white till stiff peaks form.
4.When syrup reaches 260 degrees, very gradually add the syrup to egg whites,
beating at high speed with electric mixer.
5. Add vanilla and beat until candy holds its shape, 4-5 minutes.
6. Stir in the chopped nuts or cherries, if desired. (How about chopped dates?!)
7: Quickly drop candy from a teaspoon onto waxed paper, swirling the top of each piece.
8. Let cool.
Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.
Which is basically a recipe for Divinity.
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/9327/divinity/
Considering that it is a flat candy, it was probably spread into a pan. Divinity is a cooked candy, that is then dropped onto a cookie sheet to cool. It's a rough-looking candy, though it is delectable.
Pipchicks are probably similar, but I suspect they have some kind of dairy in them, based on how it looks when Jeannie bites into it. It appears to have a different texture than Divinity. Plus, there's more yellow (beige) color to it, suggesting butter. I would also suspect, given the cultural origins of Jeannie, that it is also flavored with either rosewater or orange-blossom water (easily found these days in ethnic groceries.)
Of course, given that it has properties formerly unknown to humans, I like to think that there are plants known to the djinn that also have magical properties. Pipchicks likely uses one for flavoring, and humans have never tasted it due to it having adverse/unknown effects on them.
The fact that the recipe Jeannie's mother gives her also affects humans badly suggests that she knows hidden properties of known foods, such as the pits of the dates
Great observations! And for the record, I have always just assumed pipchicks did in fact taste like divinity.
