No laugh track?

Tonight on Me-TV i was Hogan's Heroes episode "Is there a Doctor in the House" 1968.
There was no laugh track. I don't think I ever seen that on HH. I rather liked it without the laugh track. Did anyone else catch this?

I just watched that too. I do know that the pilot episode was originally without the laugh track, but I did not realize that some other episodes also lacked it..... I was just reading on IMDB about a 1966 episode where one of the 'trivia' entries says 'has no laugh track' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0602413/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv My question is whether these episodes originally had no laugh track, or if they were re-mixed in later days to leave off the laugh track (possibly also an option on a DVD, as a SAP (second audio program))?

The same episode is on YouTube, and it has the laugh track.
Did MeTV get a hold of a oddball tape, or did they strip the laugh track?

reply

Apparently there are different edits of the show (I'm now believing this was probably done when the show entered being sold on DVDs, or on fairly recent releases in syndication); I'd like to read the DVD features description -- it may be an option to turn laugh track off...... Remember, the original audio tape recording for the dialog would have been separate ffom the added laugh track (in other words, the laugh track was added in post-production) and so it was probably very easy to use the original tapes without the laughs.

By the way, I also surprisingly liked it without the laugh track

I just found this: "Laugh Track: This show has an odd history with its laugh track; in its earlier seasons (particularly the first), the laugh track is almost deafening, and very much abused, with loud bursts of laughter at rather mild gags. It eventually grows more conservative as the seasons progress, but then we get to the last two seasons, where the laugh track is curiously poorly edited, with many episodes (particularly from season five) having laughs no louder than whispers. Interestingly, the 2015 run of the show on ITV4 in the UK actually has the laugh track absent on most episodes. This arguably alters audience perceptions of the show by emphasizing the more dramatic moments over the comedy."

Well, at least these three episodes don't have a perceptible laugh track in the versions syndicated on TV but they are there on the DVD versions. However, the laugh tracks appear to be there at a very low volume, and if you turn the volume up really high, you can just barely hear them. The three episodes:

Hogan's Heroes: Sn. 1, Ep. 18 The Gold Rush

Hogan's Heroes: Sn. 1, Ep. 21 The Great Impersonation

Hogan's Heroes: Sn. 4, Ep. 4 Hogan's Trucking Service... We Deliver the Factory to You

Who knows, there may be more.
