Nearly All the Prison Camp Nazi's were ...

Really Jewish...
Col Klink
Sgt Schultz
Gen Burkhalter
Maj Hochstedder

I find that Ironic ---

I wonder if any non Jewish German/Austrians were ever considered for the show ?

reply

I'm sure all actors were considered... the Jewish Performers might have been given an edge, as it was an extra way to flip the Bird to the Nazis... ie Not only are you being made out to be bumbling Idiots, but we're Paying Jews to Mock you as well...

I've cited elsewhere that Mel Brooks (himself a Jew) is on the record as saying he feels that Mocking the Nazis and making them the butt of Jokes is an effective way of reducing their power, and the perceived power of their ideology.

reply

Maybe non-Jewish German actors weren't too keen about playing comic Nazis just 20 years after the war.

reply

Col. Klink, Sgt. Schultz, and Gen. Burkhalter weren't Nazis. Maj. Hochstedder was of course a Nazi. It's a very common mistake to label all Germans from that time as Nazis even thought they wern't. You wouldn't call Marya a commie, would you?

Everyone may have an opinion but very few seem to have an informed one.

reply

Werner Klemperer only took the role under the condition that Klink never "won" in his schemes. And the Nazis in this were always the fools.

OTOH, Leonid Kinskey, who played in the first episode, but turned down an ongoing role. "The premise to me was both false and offensive. The Nazis were seldom dumb and never funny."

reply

That was Kinskey's version, could be accurate. But from the pilot, he just didn't fit in. He was probably in his early 60s, about 25 years too old to be one of the Heroes.
