German Sgt carrying a Thompson MG

In the episode, "Go light on the heavy water", the German sgt watching the truck, is carrying a Thompson machine gun. Any one else catch that?

reply

It is possible that the Thompson machine gun had been confiscated from either a captured or dead enemy soldier. However, although finding enemy weapons is common in combat, you can't use it unless you have an ample supply of ammunition for that weapon.

In a POW camp, generally a lot of ammunition isn't necessary. I'd read that captured enemy machine guns/rifles were used in prison camps to free up German weapons for front-line use.

reply

That is correct. It was quite common for the Nazis to arm rear-echelon troops (and sometimes front-line troops) with captured munitions.
