Lisa's First Day On the Farm

In this episode they're going through the house and in the kitchen there is a newspaper in the cabinet that says "Lincoln to talk at Gettysburg"......first of all wouldn't the headline have stated "Lincoln to SPEAK at Gettysburg"? Second of all why would a 100 yr old newspaper be lying around the kitchen cabinet? Didn't Haney live there up until the farm was sold to Oliver?

As I recall, the joke was that the newspaper was used as shelf paper and hadn't been changed for over 100 years. While your grammar point is well taken, it doesn't seem unreasonable to think that a headline writer in 1863 COULD have not used the best word in a given headline.
