Why are Oliver and Lisa so OLD?!

They didn't have any young actors/actresses available to play the parts back in 1965? They are supposed to be a young newly wed couple no? They BOTH look mid-50s to early 60s. Oliver and the woman who plays his mother look the same age!

They were about right for the characters. For Oliver to play hobby farmer he had to accumulate some savings which meant logging quite a bit of time at a law firm. By and large lawyers were not raking up millions of dollars per case back then. I know of more than one family where once you hit 30 you look like you are 57 but then don't age for a while so there are worse offenses out there.

They were definitely NOT supposed to be a young couple or newlyweds. If you have seen the series, they had several flashbacks--each one different--about Oliver and Lisa meeting during the war. Since it was set in the mid 60s, that makes them in their 40s at the youngest. While they were a bit vague on when they actually got married, it was never supposed to have just happened in the last half dozen years or so.

You are correct about Oliver appearing close to his mother's age. In real life, Eddie was just one year younger. However, Oliver was clearly supposed to be a bit younger than Eddie Albert. I pictured him as being in his mid-40s, not the 59-year-old he was when the show started.

This is a still from Season 1, Episode 1 of Oliver as a "young" Harvard Law grad....you figure graduate HS @18, 4 yrs of undergrad and 4 yrs of law school he'd be 26.....this looks like the GRANDFATHER of a 26 yr old

In general, stars or TV shows and movies were older by today's standards. The 'young and beauty' movement just wasn't there in the 60s. Look at the top shows in that Era and the age of the main cast. Compare it to 2016- younger people today, and generally better looking/better bodies. Then it was about substance. Now it's about style.

If there is any discrimination in this world today, it is ageism. Honestly to hear some of the comments on these message boards concerning aging or elderly people, it is very narrow-minded and bigoted.

I also think that the ages of the two lead characters were part of the joke

They weren't newlyweds, they were characters who had newly moved to a farm after living in a penthouse apartment. And, what is wrong with being older?

reply

OP, what's with the ageism? What's up with you? If you're younger and don't want to get old, too bad. If you're older and hate being older, too bad. Respect others, all ages. Would that really hurt you?

Just look up Eddie Albert...he's a tough war hero.
