Did you guys see the Get Smart movie?

What did you think of it? I love it.

reply

I saw the first one when it was in theaters ("The Nude Bomb"). I couldn't understand why 99 or the original Chief weren't in it (wasn't aware that Platt was deceased). Glad to see Larrabee, but it wasn't the same without Feldon.

I want to see the 1989 Get Smart Again movie but haven't yet!

reply

Don't think I've ever seen it either.

reply

I did, too..also the 1989 TV and 2008 theatrical. And enjoyed them.I'll be loving them.Like Maxwell Smart, Agent 86, used to say...

I thought the Steve Carrel one wasn't very Smart. For example they had a comedian embedded in a tree, but that was a cameo and didn't even mildly affect the plot.

And Anne Hathaway is just plain boring and doesn't have the fluffy sweet Polly appeal of Barbara Feldon.

reply

The Steve Carrel movie was crap.

The Nude Bomb wasn't very good.

There was a 1989 TV movie, written by one of the writers of the original show, and it had Don Adams, Barbara Feldon, Dick Gottier and the original Sigfried. It was great...probably the best TV series reunion made-for-TV movie ever made.

Agree! "Get Smart Again!" (1989) was the best post-series incarnation of the show.

I enjoyed "Get Smart Again!" very much. The only potential downside to that movie was that quite a few jokes were recycled from the series.

And I notice that no one has brought up in this thread the 1995 Get Smart series with Andy Dick as Max's son.

reply

Old post but I thought I would answer...I've seen the movie... even have it on dvd somewhere. It was a good reunion, but way too easy to figure out who the bad guy was.

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

I definitely enjoyed that one - got a good laugh from Larabee going to work every day after CONTROL was shut down in the Ford administration, tending plants that created a jungle in the office...reminded me of the Laurel and Hardy movie 'Block Heads' where WWI soldier Stanley kept manning his post in a trench 20 years after the war was over.

Also, I did enjoy the recent movie - Steve Carrel's Smart was a likeable, thoughtful reinvention of the character. His dance scene with the big lady was actually pretty awesome for both of them.

reply

No desire whatsoever to see the 2008 film. From everything I've heard, that movie was "Get Smart" in name only.

reply

One REALLY annoying problem with it: He kept doing the "Missed it by that much" line...without gesturing with his fingers...

WHAT THE HELL IS THE POINT OF THAT? That's a criminal misunderstanding and screwing up of basic humor. It's been seven years since it came out, and it still makes me mad at an actor that I thought had a gift for humor.

The Nude Bomb - a reboot before reboots were vogue, this movie tries to update the show's style and humor for a new modern audience. Some jokes are good, the cast is good, some jokes hold up well, Don Adams still convinces in those physical stunts despite being age 57 at the time!! He looked younger than Roger Moore when he did "A View to a Kill" (who was 57 when he filmed that). But all in all, the movie is nowhere near as fun and innocent as the 1960s original.

In other words: Would you believe it was a massive success? No? Would you believe the film had a lavish budget that did not borrow sets from other TV shows? No? Would you believe someone tried to make that movie?

Get Smart Again (kitsch late-80s reunion movie) is more or less as sappy as "I Dream of Jeanie 15 Years Later" but it's got John DeLancie in it, so it's not all bad. I prefer the 1995 revival on FOX, though.

The Movie-Made-From-Old-TV-Show starring Steve Carroll: Interesting way to update the franchise, yet remained true to the spirit of the original. A sequel would have been nice.

Would you believe Universal wanted a two-hour ad for its movie based ride attractions?

reply

I liked it too.
