Was Agent '#99' a Cover Name for Agent '#69'?

I watched this show as a child but when I grew up and saw a rerun it hit me that Agent "#99" -the beautiful and sexy Agent #99- was simply code for Agent "#69".

Now the code name Agent 86 for Maxwell Smart is quite straightforward. But what about Agent 99? I suspect that the comedic minds of the likes of Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, needing to come up with a number, some number, for Maxe's sexy sidekick could have easily picked "69" for the female agent role. Just for fun. It sort of fits the whole irreverent, tongue-in-cheek humor of the series. But the 1960's sensors wouldn't have allowed #69 to fly so the creators simply flipped the "6" around. Get it??

I read somewhere about that being the story behind it.

However, Barbara Feldon stated otherwise in an interview, saying that it was between calling her 99 or 100 and Mel and Buck or whoever made the final call, decided 99 was more of a "girl's number." I have to say I agree, not that I'd ever thought about it for even a split second prior to seeing that!

What the real story is? No idea. It could also be that there is no story and they were going to call her "99" from the get go.
