The Earthquake and the Church

In the opening scene before the earthquake hit, it appeared that Victoria and the others were all on the main floor of the church. After the earthquake, they were all down stairs in the cellar and the rescuers were all on the main floor. Even the Padre said it was 20 feet to the cellar,

So without a hole in the floor, how did Victoria, the Indian woman, and the man get way down into the cellar? Any thoughts?

Good question. Supposedly the floor collapsed and I wonder how you can fall 20 feet and not get injured. Then they ended in an old abandoned mine because nobody was going to dig down 20 feet. BV writers have a tendency to stretch things a little. Maybe someone else has some ideas

The floor collapsing is logical, but when the rescuers came, the floor was solid. and they were in the basement of the church.

Head scratchier.

For some reason, I remember them finding their way down because they are trapped upstairs otherwise. Could be the reruns these days cut that part out. Or I could be wrong. Been a long time since I've seen some entire episodes.

No, they were all on the main floor, unless they were near the staircase and fell down the stairs. The only one near the side of the building by where the stairs would be was the Indian Girl, Victoria and the man were in the middle.

They did not fall through the floor, and land in the basement, because if they did, the main floor would not be there to support the rescuers.

Good point and now I am really wondering how they got in the cellar and then the mine. I always love a good mystery.

I took another look at it, and there doesn't seem to be a specific explanation. All three characters were in different places in the left, front-corner of the church. At this point, it would seem that only theories would work here.

The three of them ended up in the cellar (unrealistically unhurt, especially the pregnant Indian woman). From what I could piece together, only the floor in that part of the church collapsed. Victoria points out to Mr. Tate where the stairs "were" and that there was no way to get to the area where they were.

There is reason why "Earthquake" is in my bottom ten of the Big Valley episodes.

Speaking of the writers "stretching it a little",it always bothered me concerning the Barkley trips to Mexico, like they would get there in a day or two! I'm sure its a little further than that from Stockton, California to Mexico!!? On horseback, no less. Somewhat unrealistic.

I thought that myself and in the episode Boots with My Father's Name they went to Strawberry and back in one day though it is about 70 -75 miles away and of course that was around 10 or 11 hours for one day and that is impossible..
