Prints With Slightly Different Endings
Some prints of "Last Man On Earth" have slightly different endings to the original version.
In the final church scene of the original there is a brief moment when, after leaving the dead Robert Morgan on the steps of the altar, Ruth tries to comfort a young crying child: "Don't cry. There's nothing to cry about. We're all safe now. All safe".
In the 1966 U.K. GEFD theatrical release and 16mm American International Television prints this short speech was removed.
I have always believed that this was a deliberate attempt by the producers to leave a glimmer of hope at the end.
Although attacked shortly after her blood transfusion, Ruth may not have been re-infected. Robert may have arrived just in time. As a result, she would retain his immunity and would be a possible saviour of what is left of society.
The closing high angle shot of Ruth walking alone slowly down the aisle away from the altar and watched by the others could be interpreted as them recognising that "She is different".
Maybe this is just my interpretation but, with speech referred to above left in, the final scene leaves no hope at all. Has anyone else noticed this difference and attached any significance to it?
