ending (spoilers, obviously)

So, this is a fairly complex narrative given the genre of film that it is. But the end suggests that our 4 main characters are in a never-ending, time-travel loop. But they're not! They escape to 100,000 years in the future finally. So: huh?

"Future events like these will affect you...in the future!"

reply

You're right, but they return a split second off from "natural" time and enter the future through the portal in their past. That creates the loop. It's kind of a mind screw, huh?

Drain 2-6-7 is the target area... Drain 2-6-7!

That's still not a loop though. The second set of characters will still go through the events in the film like the first group did and then end up back in time like the first group...

Holy McKee!

I instantly knew it wasn't a loop, they just wanted to show that in that particular time in 1964 would be some repetition of events...
But yes, the go to far future... not mindscrew as the ending before... all humanity is lost... the few who escape can't form a civilization... it's the end.

No, there was an X-rated sequel, Sexy Times at the End of the World. Even if they can't repopulate, they are going to give it one hell of a try.

You're a funny guy - but looks aren't everything.

I think they did it in order to get another shot of Merry Anders "naked" again.

No blah, blah, blah!

The ending makes the film IMO. Without it, just a routine film. I like how the comic relief whose fault it was they got trapped isn't blamed at all.

However one explains it, it's still one of the trippiest endings of any sci-fi film.

They did the same thing in the Land Of The Lost series when the family "escapes" by going through the same river they came in by, and just as they escape, they "return" just like in the beginning of the series. We are led to believe, if I remember correctly, that there is an alternate family that comes in each time a family from the Land Of The Lost leaves. Of course, it is the same family, but that's what makes it interesting.

I remember watching this when I was a kid and being pretty freaked out that the ending was not your typical "happy" ending ... Pretty wild!
