I haven't seen the movie but it seems like a really dramatic story that will make for good opera. And Stephen is such a great tunesmith, it will be interesting.

That's a great idea! I was thinking while watching this that it would be great on the stage. And with the wonderful and weird music in the film, it would make an excellent opera as well.

Would make a good chamber opera, in the same vein as Britten's adaptation of The Turn Of The Screw, I think.

And Rene Flemming and Paul Potts would be ideal casting for the opera.

I JUST SAW THE OPERA! It was brilliant. The world premiere is tomorrow (Sept 26, 09) in Santa Barbara. I attended a dress rehearsal of Stephen Schwartz's new opera last night. Creepy and very effective. But not at all like Wicked or anything else Stephen has done. It's a legit classical piece all the way (the reference to Britten's Turn of the Screw is apt).
And the ending of the opera is different from the movie. Boy is it dark. But I won't spoil it for y'all.
