What was the "new approach" that the general was referring to?
Am I alone in being heavily disappointed that the Japanese military does absolutely nothing in this movie? I assume because, at least in the logic of the military in the movie, that they learned from the prior movie that military action is futile against giant monsters so they don't even bother anymore. We get the one briefing where the general gets up and announces some sort of "new approach" that they are working on, but we never find out what it is. I wonder what he meant? Doing hypnosis on the monsters or tracking down King Kong and airlifting him to Japan to do their fighting for them?
As a kid I thought he was coyly referring to nuking the monsters and censoring himself to not scare everyone. That's yet another disappointment in that we've never ever found out if nuclear weapons do actually have any effect on giant monsters as none of these movies have had the guts to try that out yet. In real life, it'd probably be the first thing they'd do.
