Character Confusion

Can someone please explain the human plot? I know it is probably unimportant and the movie is really about the monsters fighting each other, but I was confused.

So I am trying to figure out who is who. Naoko Shindo is a reporter who I guess is just a nice person and trying to help. Ok. Was her brother the detective who was suppose to help the princess? He is billed as Detective Shindo. And then she has someone billed as her editor. Kanamaki. Maybe it is racist, but I think I was getting her editor confused with the detective. Because I thought she was calling her editor her brother.

Let me know if I am on the right track or you can just call me a racist for not being able to tell characters apart.

Naoko Shindo is the reporter who is trying to get the scoop on the woman claiming she is a martian, who is predicting the return of the monsters' attack. Her brother, Detective Shindo, is assigned to protect Princess Salno during her visit to Japan, who actually turns out to be the same woman claiming to be a martian (the princess' memory was impacted after an attempted assassination and after she woke up, she claims she is a martian). Kanamaki is Naoko's boss, the editor-in-chief (she never calls him her brother in the movie).
