Yes it has been a very long wait.
Mom took me to see this when I was 7. It blew me away. For the first time in my life I felt what is called a "sense of wonder" about the night sky and those little lights called planets. They were worlds! I remember re-enacting the crash landing scene with my toy Mercury capsule and plastic spacemen. I would try to catch it on TV whenever I could and I once stayed up late one night to record it on beta tape. I wore the tape out watching it over and over.
I wasnt sure if RCOM would ever appear on a DVD. But finally my wait is over.
Now if only someone would release a CD of the movie soundtrack.

I inquired with Criterion about a music-only track for the dvd. They said they wanted to have it, but the music track had echoes of the voices (I guess similar to some channels on 5.1 audio), and it took alot of work just to clean up the bit they used for the menu. Even if the audio elements are available somewhere else, Paramount is apparently infamous for not helping with soundtrack releases.
