Alien ships=War Of The Worlds ships?

I haven't heard it mentioned in the trivia but those Alien ships look just like War Of The Worlds Alien ships with the gooseneck removed. Did they just reuse the WOTW ships or does it just resemble them?

reply

the commentary on the DVD addresses this...new models were made from the original plans but with new variations. Actually having them resemble WOTW ships adds a strange Mars "continuity"...like RCOM takes place in the same universe as the WOTW film.

reply

Except that the ships came not from Mars but from the middle star in the belt of Orion.

reply

And it was the same director as War Of The Worlds, so I just figured Byron cribbed the designs from his own production.

reply

Same director. Byron Haskin. He recycled some props.

Uh, correct me if I'm wrong but,....

Friday said *he* came from the middle star in the Belt of Orion,
not that the Alien Slave Masters did.

You could say it's implied but we never even see what they look like
and the Criterion DVD-Extras makes it clear the Slave-Masters were
meant to be diminutive compared to the Orionids like Friday. If
anything is implied it is that they were separate races.

FWIW,

Andrew

The alien ships in Robinson Crusoe on Mars resembled the Martian War Machines from War of the Worlds, but the models were completely different. The WOTW miniatures were fairly large (more than three feet across), made of sheet copper over a wooden framework, and had self-contained practical lighting and mechanical effects. The RCOM ships were smaller and carved from solid wood, with the light effects added using animation.

The special effects in this movie look like a Powerpoint presentation. Here are the ships in question:

I wondered also. Since it is a George Pal production perhaps he wanted to connect the two films with the same historical time line. The earth man doesn't seem to be surprised about seeing the ships, as if in his planets history Earth had been invaded by similar spacecraft. Just a possibility.
