Why did the aliens bother hunting for Friday?

I saw this movie for the first time when it came out way back in the middle sixties and has always enjoyed it when ever it came on TV. One question I have always had is why was the escaped slave Friday being hunted by the aliens? As we saw in the movie the slaves were expendable, Friday could not escape from Mars, and would of died eventually when his air-pills ran out.

I always figured it was two reasons; 1) to make an example of him, and 2) to make sure he didn't tell Earth about their existence, and therefore warn Earth giving the world's governments time to prepare a defense against them.

I thought it was a pretty good film about friendship and survival. Kind of like the great escape in space. It's a good movie.

At the time Friday escaped, the aliens weren't aware of Draper's presence on Mars. As far as they knew, there was no way for Friday to leave the planet or communicate with Earth.

I wondered that too. Maybe the ships were automated and just doing what they were made to do.
There is also this question: If friday did not know about making oxygen and believed he would need pills; why did he try to escape. What would be the point in running?

I've been thinking about your question for the last four years...

Perhaps Friday would rather die free than spend the rest of his life being a slave and dying that way. And who knows, perhaps he thought he could survive long enough to be rescued up by some other alien race.
