Rio Conchos widescreen
The Fox movie network ran an uncut widescreen showing yesterday. I hope this is an indication that the studio may be considering a dvd release.

There´s a DVD out in Spain. One guy in England bought it, and posted on www.dvdtimes.co.uk that the movie opens in 2.35 Panavision and then zooms into 16:9. Which must mean it´s cropped to 1.85. The DVD box apparently says 1.85. ImdB says 2.35.
The guy could have had his TV settings wrong but I doubt it. The posters on that forum have insider knowledge, being collecors, former theater projectionists etc.
How did it look on Fox network? 1.85 or 2.35?
I´ve seen this stuff with Panavision movies shown on TV, with main titles in 2.35, then zooming into 16:9/1.85. It´s real easy to see on an old 4:3 tube TV. Saw it with DEATH IN VENICE and THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB. Of course it´s another thing seen on a 16:9 monitor.
In 2001 or '02 a friend who knew I like RIO CONCHOS taped it for me off the Fox movie channel. It was a very-good-quality transfer leterboxed at 2.35:1.
At the time I hoped that meant a DVD release just around the corner -- but apparently not. If it ever appears, though, I can give away the VHS.
You're absolutely right! People, I'm a true blue "letterbox" fan. That IS the way a film was meant to be seen. Why, I think its crap that a lot of your dept stores only carry full size aspect ratio films for sale. And its just as bad when you show the credits as 2.35 and then cut the film as 1.85. You're losing details and that is not the way it should be! I'll never understand why people have such issues about a black bar above and below the film.
shareWhere do I cast my vote? After 45 years, I'm ready to see this one again in crisp, clean widescreen. A Blu-ray transfer with enhanced sound would be ideal. Even if the characters and story were not entertaining, this movie would still be worth it for Jerry Goldsmith's exceptional score, maybe his best western music of all. Come on, FOX!
shareThe recent German DVD release from Koch Media is widescreen, and looks great. Plus, there are no forced subtitles - unlike the French DVD. It's a fantastic release :)

Touch of Evil (Orson Welles, 1958).
The Region 1 Shout! Factory DVD release is widescreen anamorphic with the 2:35:1 ratio.
I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!
