I would say it is because John Wilson has no taste or soul, and because, like many people today, he is incapable of a sincere, honest, heartfelt response to a truthful, powerful work of art, instead hiding his emotional inadequacy behind a veil of cheap cynicism and snide mockery. Just my opinion, of course.
shareFuller work was very divisive specially in their release years, hell "Shock Corridor" and "The Naked Kiss" were (and by some people still are)considered explotation flicks, but thanks to the Nouvelle Vague several of his works has been revalued as works of an auteur. Sad that not many people know him.

You're quite right. It is an excellent film.
Only an imbecile would consider this a bad film, just to praise it by putting it on his list.
I got Mill Creek's 100 movie pack of film noir classics. I'm watching this one first because I never heard of it, and was curios about the date. Classic age of Noir ended in late 50's or '61 with Blast Of Silence. This was '64
This is not crime or film noir. This is pure exploitation, that just happened to be shot in black and white. The opening scene lets you know that in no uncertain terms with the sexual violence and screaming saxophone. Five years earlier this would have never made it past the Hays Code.
Still interesting and entertaining though. The argument of art or exploitation, why can't it be both?
