"Howard Johnson" scene
Simply put, "Why?"

Hmmm. . .

shareI suppose otherwise you'd have had a 45 minute conversation in a car with bad rear-screen. BTW, back then HoJo's was like the only restaurant on most Northeastern highways. It's cool to see one recreated in studio.
I was a little puzzled about that scene too. The overhead shot of the car makes it so obvious that it is all just filmed in the studio. Then Mark does not allow Marnie to go to the restroom, so why stop at all ? Drinking and eating just makes you want go more ! Maybe it was just a way to have an opportunity for them to talk face to face for a brief period, and show how fragile their relationship is. Hitchcock made strange but interesting films, he has been gone 35 years now...

It breaks up what would otherwise be a very long, tedious car ride.
I don't think that it is anything beyond that. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
