How did Hawkes get along with Hudson?

An interesting simile:
John Wayne asked Rock Hudson to be his co-star in the 1969 Western The Undefeated. It was an OK programmer, nothing special -- coming right after True Grit for Wayne. It is set after the Civil War, with Wayne as the former Union solider and Hudson as the Confederate.
Hudson later thanked Wayne for personally bringing him into the movie: "My career was in the toilet at the time," said a brusque Holden(he would go to TV two years later for McMillan and Wife.)
In one of the John Wayne biographies , someone quotes Wayne as saying that he and Hudson got along quite well on The Unforgiven. Wayne knew that Hudson was gay and remarked, "What a waste. What old ugly me could have done with the ladies if I had HIS face." I think Wayne and Hudson played chess on the set.
So...real professionals.
PS. In HIS autobiography, Kirk Douglas said that he got along with Hudson on "The Last Sunset," (1961.) Douglas remarked that Hudson was rather standoffish and didn't interact with him much. Douglas later learned that Hudson "liked fit blond men" and that may have been a problem for Hudson working with Douglas.
