After the accident, didn't the guy go blind (which is why he taught at school for the blind)? But he was still able to drive the car used in the US Mail heist, which was after the accident, wasn't it?

Apparently he regained his sight; the doctors said just some problems with peripheral vision.

His temporary blindness probably got him interested in the problems of blind people, so he got into that line of work after he quit driving for a living.
