The thing is, for people who love the book for young readers, the movie just does not do it justice.
It's kinda like the movie musical Mame. If you just watch it knowing nothing about it, it's a good movie. But those familiar with the stage musical who know what it COULD have been, it's not as good.

Agreed, I think people giving it the low ratings are comparing it to the book and they do have a point.
shareI saw this movie over 40 years ago, both at school and on afternoon TV, and it made an impression me because I still remember it. I really liked this and other similar movies about lone survival and primitive skills. I will have to watch it again with a more mature perspective to give it a fresh assessment.
