ideal casting?

as much as i adore bette davis, this was one of her weakest performances to date in my opinion. she was monstrously over the top in a role that really required her to underplay. on the other hand olivia de havilland was far too sweet in the role of miriam... how would you have cast the three main ladies?

charlotte: olivia de havilland proven she can play effects of mental illness with "the snake pit" and shes always great in nice, sweet roles
miriam: joan crawford great at playing subtle sinister nuances in her roles. shes have been commanding without being too obvious either
velma: rossalind russell would have played the comedy role to perfection without it having appear that it was tried too hard, as with morehead

ever see Roz Russell in Picnic? It is a God awful, over the top, hammy performance, embarrassing to watch. I happen to love Roz in other things, but I thought Moorehead was perfect in Charlotte.

i didnt mind ros in "picnic", its nowhere near her best but i think by that point she was desperate for an oscar. shes one of the few actresses or actors that pull off hammy in my opinion...shes with glenn close and peter o'toole- they always know just how far to take it.

I agree. Now Aggie may have gone over the top, but in a completely enjoyable way!
